How to Overcome Procrastination In Internet Marketing

In my last post I wrote about how to stay focused, avoid overwhelm and get everything done. You can read it HERE

I am now practicing what I preached, but my biggest barrier to success seems to be Procrastination.

Does this sound familiar: I have a blog post to do or I need to make an affiliate website, or do something towards creating a digital product and get it done today. But here is what happens, I get distracted by other things. They might be quite important or not but regardless they still stopped me getting everything done. The result – I feel disappointed at the end of the day that I didn’t get everything done.

Discover The Root Cause

This is something I have been thinking about a lot – what is it that stops me from starting? How do I overcome procrastination in internet marketing?

These are the main causes:

I don’t have a clear plan to do it – for example deciding which blog post to publish today. I have so many ideas on what to write about I don’t know which one to do. The solution – just pick one and do it! It’s overwhelm again. Goal setting and strictly following a task list will overcome this problem.

I think it will be difficult before even trying or starting. If I feel something is going to be complex, the lazy part of my brain wants to avoid it and head back to the comfort zone. Not only that it seeks easier or more fun tasks to do instead. How to overcome it – list each of the difficult steps and work on them one by one. Promise yourself a treat when completed.

Don’t Be Afraid and Do It Even If It Hurts

I’m afraid I won’t do a good job, I’ll be lost or confused or won’t be able to do it. Getting the job done gets me nearer to my goal. Is there a fear I won’t make it?

“Creativity takes courage – Henri Matisse”

It’s new and requires learning. It hurts when learning and doing something I haven’t done before. Why? Because it stretches my brain. Once learnt and applied though there is a sense of well being and accomplishment. As Winston Churchill said. “When you are going through hell – keep going” Knuckle down, do it and then enjoy the view from the top of the mountain.

Avoid Distractions

It is easy to slip back into doing other non-productive things, these are partly due to the blockages I have already described. To overcome procrastination it is important to get the distractions away. The obvious ones are going on Facebook, reading the news, making a cup of tea I don’t need, going to the loo when I don’t need to. My worst distraction was Quora – so I deleted the app from my phone. Ask yourself what do I waste time on and what can I cut out.

Deep Work

Matthew Sabia taught me the principle of Deep Work. This basically means blocking out time, say an hour and focusing everything on completing that hour by working non-stop with absolutely no distractions allowed or deviation from the work in hand. I tried it and it works amazingly well. Give it a go!

Nice tips. I don’t remember who said it, or the exact quote, but Decide what you want, determine the cost to do it (that is the effort, not dollars), and then decide to pay that price upfront.
